Hi. Welcome to Reading With Sea. I am Sea.
Sure, the idea for this reading group came out of my head and the site from my finger tips, but this isn’t only my group and it’s not holding only my ideas. This reading group is run on the comments, suggestion and participation of its members and guests. Essentially: You.
Still, here’s a bit about me: I am a book reader. A lover of reading. An appreciator of the possibility of connecting with you, a fellow lover of a good book. An individual open to being grabbed by words on a page. Someone who always has a book with them. I read constantly. I buy books like crazy. I love living amongst stacks of books and I love people who love to read.
Fellow Members:
My name is Adam, I have known Sea since high school, oh so many years ago. I actually have not seen Sea since 1999 I think so ten years I joined this group just to read more since I travel a ton and use reading to keep me entertained while in the airport waiting on flights. So the next thing you may ask is why do I travel, well, I am a merchant mariner and work on oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. I travel every three weeks to or from work.

The tractor and backhoe manuals have become what I read most for getting the work done on my little farm.
Favorite bookstore: toss up between Henderson’s in Bellingham but the staff is not the friendliest and across the street is Michael’s really nice, friendly, helpful staff – they just don’t have as large of a selection as Henderson’s. Nicole,
If you don’t have it already I have a copy of Eva Luna by Isabel Allende I could send you. Just let me know. I love finding books for people, so anyone feel free to let me know if there is something I can keep my eye out for!

I read what it was about on Goodreads and it sounds really interesting. If you have Bookmooch I could give you a point for the book. Thanks!
Permalink # Danielle said
Cool, I get it in the works and let you know

Nicole,
I am not on bookmooch so if you want to send me your address privately I will send that off to you. Getting enjoyable mail is the best!

Okay Ben,
Explain to me your love for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, I did NOT get that book.
Permalink # Ben said
Why do I love Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas? I found the characters so rich and the writing so manic, there was humor and insanity, sort of punk song crossed with the DOORS, but definitely the intensity of the writing, all slamming and wild, yet somehow still under control. I love that.

I’m going to have to reread it once of these days then.

Sea,
I noticed you didn’t give a city for yourself. I was just curious what part of the world or country you hail from?

I am currently in Seattle.

For some reason I did get a Pacific northwest feel, lol:) Univ, of Wa is one of the schools I applied to for grad school this Fall. Everyone I know that has been there loved it! My bf used to live in the San Juan islands, beautiful.

Well, very instinctive of you. I hope you get in.

I am getting my master’s in English Literature, I know so predictable:) I want to teach at the college level and write.

And thank you for the good wishes! I got accepted to UNH but still waiting on the others, we shall see….

Man, I wish I had had the balls (sorry) to major in Literature. I went into Science thinking I wanted to be a Doctor, then I got scared and ended up wasting 3 years at Law School which wasn’t really my passion. I wish you the best of luck!
Permalink # Danielle said
So what are doing/ studying now? Something about exams right?
I also started out in science. I enjoy science but it’s not my passion. I wanted to be a marine biologist but was persuaded that the money was bad. Went to be a Dr. as well but then decided to do what I love and what I am good at. I’ll deal with the $$:)

I’m actually waiting for my Bar Exam results. I loved Science, but really didn’t want to be a Doctor so I finished my B.S. and wandered around for a year until Law was suggested to me because I loved to read. I like Intellectual Property and Entertainment Law, but hate everything else about it.

Nicole,
Have you ever read Isabel Allende? I think you may like her writing. The House of the Spirits is great.
Permalink # Nicole said
Love it! It’s one of my favorite books, I haven’t tried any of her other books though I think I have some of them lying around somewhere.

I’m wondering if any of you can help me out with this. I started using Bookmooch at the beginning of the year and so far the books I have gotten have been in great condition, but yesterday I got one that has broken that streak! It wasn’t really the condition of the book, it was an old edition and the pages were slightly yellowed, but the SMELL!! The book smelled like an ashtray!! It’s unbearable, it hit me like a slap in the face once I opened the envelope it came in.
So, I searched online and some of the tips included sealing the book in a plastic bag with either baking soda or kitty litter. I don’t have any of those things at hand, so I’m wondering if any of you have bought or received any smelly books and what, if anything, did you do about it? (Discarding the book is not an option)
Thanks!

Hmmm…other than those suggestions you have, I used to keep a few books in a wooden box with nag champa incense and the smell transferred. People always commented on the good smell, lol. I am not sure how it would do with stinky paper but it might work. Or opening it up and airing it out? Hope you find a fix.
Permalink # Nicole said
The incense is helping!
Permalink # Nicole said
I got the stink out of the book!
Permalink # Danielle said
I’m so happy it worked!

Rachel, have you ever tried Steve Martin’s fiction? I enjoyed both of his novellas, The Pleasure of My Company and Shop Girl.
