Reading With Sea

A book club on your own time

Hi.  I wanted to take some time to talk with you about a few important things that will be changing starting March.

First: Our group will be reading three books during the month of March:
1. American Rust by Philipp Meyer
2. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
3. Chronic City by Jonathan Lethem

During February, we only read one book together and as people are getting use to the group and feeling their way around the website, one book seemed like a good pace for us.  In March, I wanted to make it more flexible.  Thus, starting in March we will have multiple books featured.  It is not required for any member to read all three.  I want you to read the book or books that interest you and that you have time for.  If you have time and desire to read more than one, then please do.  If you read a lot and want to read all three – that’s great.

Second: This month we are fortunate to have one of our members, Sam Noh, lead the discussion on The Catcher in the Rye.  If anyone is ever interested in leading discussion on a book, please let me know.  The idea is to have this be a community  reading group, which means that your voice is important, welcomed, encouraged, enjoyed, and greatly appreciated.

Third: In the past, discussion questions have been posted in batches with a new batch posted each week.  Starting in March, all discussion questions will be posted on the start of the month.  The idea is to give you as much opportunity and freedom to discuss when it is convenient for you.  As always, feel free to post your own discussion questions for any of the featured books.

Fourth: The Book Raffle page has been updated.  Please let me know what books you want to read by voting on the books listed and also by commenting on what you are interested in.  That may be books that you have been thinking about buying, have just read and want to discuss, or books that are already on your ‘To Be Read’ pile/list.

Fifth: I want to write a long post about reading journals soon.  If you keep a reading journal and would like to share something from it, I am looking for volunteers to send pictures of their reading journals and descriptions of what you would like to share about your experience keeping one or anything else you’d like to note about it.  If you do not keep one, but want to start, I am also welcoming you to discuss how the beginning process is going for you.

Also, just as a reminder:

In March, there is going to be a GIVEAWAY CHALLENGE.  Here is how it will work:

Throughout the month of March, the book club member with the highest participation will receive their very own MOLESKINE PASSION BOOK JOURNAL.  Here are the qualifiers:

1.  You have to be a member.  This means you have to have email subscribed (sorry for all your RSS feed subscribers, but this is the only verifiable way).
2.  You have to have a member’s profile.  To see what this is, go here: MEMBERS
3.  You will have to have the highest level of participation (comments).
4.  There will only be one winner.

The winner will be announced March 31st!
